Checked my early spots on Sunday, couple small ones that need a little more time.
I think we need some 70+ degree days and 50+ degree nights to get'em poppin!

Picked 40 or so yesterday afternoon. All small greys but. They should be in full swing by the weekend.

I've always heard about these for years & love mushrooms very much, but have never had any. Any tips on areas I should look in? obviously not asking for specific locations, only the types of areas that would be likely to produce. Thanks

These are very difficult to find and best left to the veterans. They pop up right up under your feet when you least expect it. Sometimes you'll see one out of the corner of your eye and then you turn to look closer and to pick it and it will be gone. Very difficult to hunt. This is why the vets call it morel hunting vs. picking. OK, just kidding
Back to your question, they can be found near dead or dying elm trees. Often on the down hill side. Wood lots are best although I have found them on lawns and cow pastures before. Look for old growth woods, south facing exposure early in the season like now. The season follows the warming of the soils so north facing late season generally rules. Growing season can be a 3-6 weeks depending on the warming trend and moisture of soils.
Look through previous threads using the advance search feature for pics and more tips.
Morel maniacs never give up their hot spots. Remember to leave some for "seed". You should never pick out a patch. The remaining will disperse spores for the next year batch and you don't want to make the mushroom spirits mad.
Good luck and happy hunting.

Thanks for the info! The next thing I was expecting from your first line was "ya gotta think like a mushroom" & "be the mushroom". I'll bet there is mushroom hunting apparel too, I'll check at Cabela's grin

If you are out searching for Morells and see any veteran hunters they usually wear the mushroom camo, ask them where they buy it.

If you have ever played Super Mario you may remember the mushroom character "Toad" he has the white mushroom cap with the Red Spots on it. That 'is' the apparel you refer to.

Try to find some mushrooms and eat them first as it makes it much easier to spot the guys running around in camo suits once you consume the mushrooms.

The blondes are starting to pop also. Should be a good weekend to fill the onion bag.
Remember to use mesh bags to help disperse the spores of the ones you pick. grin

Also don't pull the whole 'shroom out of the ground. Leave a little stem to help out with next years crop also.

Went out last night for an hour. Checked only a couple spots and couldn't find a single mushroom. Not sure when they'll show up.
