"Coon Rapids Dam Pool Raising May Be Delayed

The raising of the Coon Rapids Dam pool to summer levels may be delayed due to increased river flow and projected weekend rains. When river flow is too fast, the required safety warning buoys around the dam cannot be placed and the pool raising cannot be completed. As a result, this year’s target date of May 10 may not be achieved.

Three Rivers Park District staff will be monitoring flow data throughout the weekend and early next week to gauge the impact of expected rain. At that time Three Rivers Park District will be better able to determine the completion date of the pool raising. Updates will be provided as information becomes available.

The 1,000-foot dam is part of Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park and stretches across the Mississippi River from Brooklyn Park to Coon Rapids. It is operated by Three Rivers Park District. For updates, visit http://www.threeriversparkdistrict.org or call the Park District Hotline at 763/559-6778.

Don't know where'ld they raise it to, it's 1 1/2 feet over lake level here today, and truckin'. \:o
Below the dam the islands are going under.

From today's CRD update.

Coon Rapids Dam Pool Raising Will Be Delayed

The raising of the Coon Rapids Dam pool to summer levels will be delayed due to increased river flow. When river flow is too fast, the required safety warning buoys around the dam cannot be placed and the pool raising cannot be completed. As a result, this year’s target date of May 10 will not be achieved.

After monitoring flow data throughout the weekend to gauge the impact of recent rain, Three Rivers Park District staff now expects that the pool raising will be completed by Wednesday, May 14, weather and rain conditions permitting. For updates, visit http://www.ThreeRiversParkDistrict.org or call the Park District Hotline at 763/559-6778.

As a result of the delay the boat launch on the Anoka County side of the pool has been closed and will remain closed until the safety warning buoys are in place.

The 1,000-foot dam is part of Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park and stretches across the Mississippi River from Brooklyn Park to Coon Rapids. It is operated by Three Rivers Park District.

I am addicted no obsessed noLost touch of reality when I started fishing smallies with a flyrod. Looking for some pointers and places to go around St Cloud. Should I bring waders, rent a canoe excetera. Thanks

I've noticed the levels of the river at Elk River and the Rum River that flow into the Miss Rvr at Anoka to Coon Radis has receeded by about 1 and 1/2 to 2 foot already. So are they planning on raising the dam yet?

Attwood,

The river is a bit high for good wade fishing.
A canoe would work if you can get a shuttle.
I'm hoping the levels drop. I do a fair amount of fly-bassing from Clearwater down to the Coon Rapids dam. I just switched almost entirly to the fly-rod in the last couple of years. I agree. It is FUN!

I just received this e-mail from the three-rivers group. This is just a quick update - the recreational pool is at the summer elevation, and the buoys are in place. I hope you'll have many opportunities to enjoy fishing this year. Can't wait to get on the water and try my luck at a smallie or two. I never really catch any big ones they seem to be from 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 pounders . . . but they sure are fun.
