Anyone else struggle over the weekend? We ended up with one eye on Sat. though it was a nice 26"er a nice fat female that was released. Daught did catch a crappie just over 15" that made her day. Very quite fishing overall.

I also struggled (but often do on that lake). Fished with 3 other guys from Midnight unil 2:30 with 1 walleye, and several crappies, sunnies, bullheadsa and a sheephead for our efforts. We tried slip bobber/leeches, jig/minnow and crankbaits. I was surprised to see sunnies hitting on the leeches at 1 a.m. in the morning. Have other people had that happen?

Then my wife and I went out in the rain Saturday night. No eyes and a couple crappies.

Way to go to your daughter. I bet she will be excited about that fish for a long time !! smile

I struggled with the 'eyes on Saturday but the crappies and sunnies were more than willing to cooperate. As for sunfish biting late at night I have actually had that happen to me a couple of times ice fishing there. All of my crappies and sunnies were caught on a chartreuse and white 1/64 oz. T.H.E. Jig 5 to 6 feet below a float over by the other boats.

Does anyone care to share what part of the lake they were fishing to catch crappie? I also heard from a friend of mine that a guy that he knows was catching 16 inch+ crappies and they got there limit of them! Could this happen in waconia? Do they have such fish of size and if so do they have any kind of population of fish this size?

I have caught 3 this year that were 16+, but i released them all, hopefully the guy that told you this released his too, there is no reason to take big crappies out of a lake like this. Total nonsense.

Being as its around the time of Minnesota's birthday, I'll say this: I don't think anyone in the history of the state of MN has ever caught a limit of true 16"+ crappies. I know I've heard the stories from my grandpa about the gigantic crappies of Minnesota's past, but they also drank alot of whiskey while fishing back then....

Water temps were 52 to 54 last night in the parts of the lake I tried.

No 16 inchers for us crazy Did catch a few crappies and sunnies on our 8th spot of the night though. Had a hard time convincing the kids it was time to quit-that has never happened before cool

I agree with you pete it is total nonsense to keep fish that big out of a lake like Waconia. In fact anything over 12 should be thrown back but to each their own I guess.

I had a friend yesterday at softball tell me the same thing, that he had a friend that was of Waconia and caught their limit on 15+" slabs. I wonder if they are the same people. I wonder if it is true at all.

There has been an awful lot of big fish being caught out there this year. I know of multiple 15's, 16's and 17's being pulled but most of them were caught by fishermen with enough common sense to release them back in the lake.

They are monster crappies and to catch a limit is quite a feat. If true, it won't be long and the lake will be full of crappie anglers even more so than now.

WOW, soo very sorry about that! These guys caught 10 {limit} of 14-16 inch crappie but all big fish where released back to swim another day!!!! blush But they did go home with some smaller fish for the pan. Sorry about the misleading comment.

Thanks, Kruger

Had to check this out- Went out with Nolan Braun and his wife. Nolan has fished Waconia all his life and told me he and had done very well over the weekend.I have never been on the lake so I needed the help. We caught a 15+"(my personal best), a 14" and two 13" crappies along with the usual sized crappies. One of the 13" was a white crappie and the 15+" appeared to be a cross. We had the area to ourselves at first and caught the big ones in short order. As other boats inched into our area the big crappie bite ended. Anyway all the fish were released. Think deeper water when hunting for the big ones and I'll leave it at that. Water temp was 53 and the wind was blowing big time into our area.
