I believe it is clear and deep, but the portage is pretty easy, I had camped up in voyageurs park last fall for a couple of days and just explored pretty much for 2 days and we stopped there to have lunch. Nice easy portage, but you have to use the boats that are in there I guess.

I was up on that lake two years ago, and we hammered the smallies and largemouth. They were up on the flats and spawning. We caught them on tubes, dropshot rigs, and jerkbaits. Probably caught 60+ fish, and they were ALL RELEASED un harmed. Please do the same. They were too beautiful. The biggest we got were 18-19" and 3.5-4.0lbs On a side note...there is a giant rock as you travel to the right from the portage boats. Watch out for the giant snapping turtle. It was the biggest one I have ever seen and quiet a specticle. He was up sunning the day we were there.

No problem. I want everyone to enjoy the same fun we had. Best colors were white tubes (you can see them), clown jerk-bait bait (rogue)

Amen to what my son has said . . . easy portage as far as I was concerned, and I've got some age on me! The one thing you will always have at Mukooda is that you'll have the lake pretty much to yourself . . .two other boats perhaps! And it is very clear . . . .

I have rented a boat in there for memorial weekend, I was told you cannot portage your own boat in there is that true? what about motors?

You can, or in previous years, could portage your own boat in, but with the "mussel" situation, that may have changed. We rented the "Pine Point" boat as we were staying there, and they also rented an 8 HP outboard. You should be able to take your own outboard and gas in if you wanted to. Suggest you contact a resort that has a boat there, and reserve the motor also if you don't take your own . . .I believe there were only 3 boats available at the portage, and they were not all Pine Point boats.

I heard you CANNOT portage your own boat in anymomre because of the exotic species. I alos heard there are restrictions on bring bait in. I'd call the NPS as they manange the lakes access.
218-283-6600 is the number I have for Voyageurs National park.

You're right, NO portaging of boats. Its the same park game plan as last year: artificial bait only on interior lakes, and no outside boats allowed, only the park's boats will be there for use. This is to help prevent the spread of the Spiny Waterflea.

Last August, all four people in my crew caught a 3.5 pounder. Wacky-rigged Senkos and Rattling, lipless cranks of various brands worked very well. Worked the weedlines and then found a school holding on an incline that went from about 11 feet to 25 feet -- dropped an anchor nearby and casted into that area and did great!

The portage is really easy, and its definitely worth the effort. Pretty much my favorite lake.

We practice CPR -- Catch, Photograph, Release.

We have been there a few times. There is an easy portage. There are boats there from crane lake resorts and voyagerair houseboats. Beautiful clear deep lake.
