I took "rookie weekend" off this year. I'll wait and take some sick days during the week so I don't have to deal with the crowds.

I just got back in after spending the morning out on the lake. Felt good to be back out bobbing around again! Second cast of the short season and bang, 22" walleye. Fourth cast, bang, CATFISH! LOL. After that I couldn't work any more mojo and it was quiet for the rest of the morning. Tried some different things but didn't have any nibblers. Oh well. It was a rush having that first fish so early in the season. I was really thinking that this was going to be a good morning after getting a fish on the second cast, but like they say: One is a fluke, two is a pattern. I was pitching a jig with a chartreuse Gulp Alive minnow. I had never used Alive before but after catching one right away my confidence in it went up quite a few points. Stuff sure stinks! Heard from a buddy who went out at midnight at a different lake and he got about a 1/2 dozen with almost all of them over 20" casting cranks. Anybody else have anything to share? I would have packed up and moved to a different lake but the rain is coming and didn't feel like getting soaked. Call me a wuss, but there is a lot of season left yet and I didn't feel like catching pneumonia right from the get-go.

Went out at midnight with a couple buddies and did very very well. Caught 11 eye's, 16-23 inches and my beast, a 30" 10lb post spawn female on a #12 Thunderstick. Didn't see much being caught on live bait. All of ours were caught on cranks with a #12 Original Floating Rap taking the most fish. And yes, these were caught in the area.

My brother and I hit a local lake at midnight. By 6:30 we had boated a 28, 26.5, 26, 19, 17, and 2 14s. Most was on a jig and minnow long lined behind the boat. Should not have switched tactics so much, maybe would have caught more fish.

I fished a local lake as well with little success. Only picked up one 15 incher. Saw only a couple of other fish caught. Fished from about 6:30 to noon.

Actually shallow rock bars and sand are a good spot to look right now. Hester

Actually, the majority of walleye's being caught this early by myself and all of my friends is shallow along the shoreline, not out in the middle of the lake where this particular rockbar is located. When the walleye's go deeper as the summer progesses, they will indeed use the rockbar to feed as it is the shallowest (sp) point around. But right now, shallow is where you want to be. Like I said, I hope they got some out there.
