I really need help. I want to take vacation when the Morels get to my area. Problem is I should tell my boss when I want off a little ahead of time. I know it is impossible to predict but would really like your opinions of when they'll be here. I am in Ottertail county. I also think it would be cool if we had a post to report our finds. THANKS

Following lots of years in shrooming, this is my best guess. Temps are low and will remain cool for the next week. Looks like mid 70's on Tuesday so that should get some things going. But again cool following that. By next week, we should heat up a little and the moisture looks great so far. If I was a betting man, I would shoot for May 24th or so. They may begin a little sooner but to let them grow a little and have most germinate, I would shoot for that date or the following week. Good luck!

Watch the board and look for that area, or weather reports of warm rains...

My best guess is, up there, 1st or 2nd week of June, but there are those that know what ground temps are best, just like water temps for spawning runs...but my experience for a good harvest, you need the warm rains too, followed by a little heat, which brings a nice humid atmosphere for them to really pop overnight... \:\)

I would guess later May and maybe a week later. One needs heat now and once they start to grow, if one is a few days late, thats ok. You will be able to pick both the yellow and the greys.

I didn't find any yesterday on my walk and last year at this time I was already giving them away. This soaking rain today should prime the growing areas well. Now, all we need is the warm weather. They all might burst at the same time. We'll all need bigger gathering bags.

I picked my first mushrooms of the season while working down in Central Illinois on 5-1-08. They were in the peak of the season and I picked around 2 lbs in an area that had already been heavily covered. I took my 1st hatful of the season photo which I do each year.

I also found several mushrooms in the Ottumwa, IA area on 5-6-08. Although it was warm enough, it was very dry to produce any numbers yet down there.

My brothers were out here in the Winona area of SE Minnesota on Saturday and picked 5lbs so they should be starting to peak here in the next week.

I also sent the hat photo into the local newspaper and they included it in an article about the coming season.

Nice little cache of Morels... smile

Emergence should progress North, from the Winona find, about 50-100 miles per week, under current conditions...lots of nice moisture incentives Northward in MN, though I notice the ground in Illinois in the Photo, is dry and cracked...

Any idea of ground Temps in these producing areas???
