My friend and i would like to get into fly fishing. I have an old rod laying around but i was wondering what would be the best reel in the 20-40 dollar range for fly fishing panfish such as bluegills?
Thanks for the help!
Ryan

Any cheap fly reel will do. When flyfishing for pannies all your reel does is hold your extra line and you should never get into your backing so getting an expensive one is pretty useless.

A Pflueger Medalist, low end Okuma or 3M Concept reel would fill the bill within your budget. Good luck!

I couldn't have said it better myself. Turiprap gave you some brand names that carry cheap, low end reels that will do just fine for your needs. Fish won't care how much your fly reel costs or what brand it is, either. Just suit up and get ready to enjoy a whole new way of looking at fishing.

thanks for the advice guys sorry i havent gotten back on here for a while. It was my birthday yesterday and my parents caught onto the fact that i was liking fly fishing so they got me a whole kit with materials for fly tying as well as a book on how to tie flies. So far I just have a few rather crummy flies but I am getting better. Went up to Joes Sporting Goods this evening and got some fly line (Scientific Anglers AirCel Bass) while my friend got another kit so he can make a few flies as well. I have an old reel so I guess I will just slap some line on there and try it out. We got the bass version of the line because we figure if we get something big we dont want to break off. We also got a leader material in the bass version of the Scientific Anglers as well. Is a Tippet really necessary with a florocarbon leader?
By the way I think I will have to pass on your deal because I am already knee deep in Fly Fishing gear but I do appreciate the offer.
This weekend I will practice up on my casting and hopefully tag into a few fish.
Thanks for all your help!

Ryan

tippet's always a good idea as you'll find your leader gets shorter quickly with every lure change as well as cutting out wind knots and other mishaps. If you're just bass and pike fishing you can get by with shorter, stouter rigs.

good tippet trick I learned the other day from a magazine article was to use a surgeon's loop on the end of your leader and tippet. Sounded like a good way to save your leader from getting shortened from tying on new tippet.
