i have kept an eye on this topic for the past few days with interest. first id like to say i really respect and admire people that are in law enforcement. to me with society as it is today theres no amount of money to convince me to enter that field. watch the news, whatever the officer does its is fault, drives me nuts. like tom bernard on kqrs says, obey the laws and you wont have issues with police! so my hats off to all types of law enforcement people. with that said will this get me out of my next ticket? hehehe.

I used to deliver newspapers for the Trib in the northern suburbs, mainly at night. I can't count how many times I got stopped for being a suspicious character, at least till they got to know my vehicle. Being a woman that was out in the middle of the night it was very comforting knowing they were there. When I bought my house in Ramsey I got a route over there. One night on my route I noticed a squad car on the shoulder near a corn field, no officer around, I figured he might be off doing a nature break. I drove on and ignored it, I later found out an officer I knew had been clubbed over the head and left there. I always felt guilty for not stopping and at least hollering out "are you okay". He recovered but it has always bugged me that I should have reported it. If I get stopped, there must be a reason, I never get irritated about it. My hats off to the men in blue!!!

Wouldn't beet yourself up over that Barb. I think most of us assume officers can take care of themselves. I agree that there must be a reason to be stopped. I find if I cooperate and did nothing wrong that they let you go on your way. Even if you are speeding or whatever, if you treat them with respect, most will give it back to you.

A guy can go into any other state, and not have to do what the people here in MN have to do as far as skills?

The other MN sworn officers who have replied already can address this better than I, but my understanding is that in many other states you go through the hiring process,get hired as a police cadet, eligible to enroll in that states police academy, and go through the academy.If you graduate the academy then you are on the job as a rookie paired with a field training officer during a probationary period, in that respective department that hired you.Some out of state agencies actually have an academy level salary you get paid, but not all other areas of the country have this.Then after you graduate, and pass all the hiring requirments, you are commisioned or sworn in as a peace officer in that state, and on the job.Some other states do not require the education/classes/credits that MN does to get hired,or qualify to go to the academy, but realistically a police administrator would prefer a candidate have some educational background pertaining to the job.I don't claim to be a know it all on this stuff,but an aquaintance of mine from the past, got hired in another state, and what I just posted is what he went through to get the job.The cops here on the forum can correct, or add to my info here.Hope that helps.
