Lake Vermilion
May 12, 2008

After checking questionable ice out condition on the Tower end of Vermilion for the last week we finally got enough open water on the South shore of Big Bay to be able to get out onto a large enough section of water to be able to fish. Even though my clients and I were unable to gain access to my prefered "Opening Day" walleye spot because of a huge ice flow on most of Big Bay I was able to get to a couple of my back up spots and we managed to have a very good day on Saturday!

St. Croix River
May 12, 2008

The water temperatures have raised with some nice spring weather, dandelions have popped up, and the walleye are getting on a solid chew, the St. Croix River walleye bite is good. Walleyes are still dealing with some serious current on the river, and this heavy flow predictably locates a good number of walleye in lower flow areas.

South Central MN
May 12, 2008

Water temperatures on the lakes in our area are slowly creeping their way into the mid-50's but it is taking its sweet, old time. And, so are pan fish with their migration into shallow water. Most of the fish that are being found are in 10 - 25' of water, staging either right on the bottom of the "first break" or just off of it, closer to a basin.

Bemidji area
May 12, 2008

Anglers fishing Minnesota opener faced cold temperatures, rain and even snow showers in the Bemidji area. Reports vary, but most caught their walleyes near the river and creek inlets. Lakes with out river systems passing through, had a slow bite. Water temps. were 42-47 degrees on most lakes, as ice left the lakes only a couple of days ago. Best walleye action was on a jig and minnow fished very slowly.

West Central WI
May 12, 2008

illow River State Park - The general fishing opener provided some unexpected good results, given the cold weather in the prior days. Several keeper size largemouth bass were caught and released on the lake. The largest fish was reported at 20 inches long. The recent rain brought the Willow River up a little bit and it is still running off color.

Marinette County - Warmer temperatures will bring out the springtime wildflowers. Marsh marigolds, also known as buttercups, are beginning to bud and bloom with lilac bushes just beginning to bud and leaf out. Turkey hens are nesting usually seen running along agricultural and open fields along woodlands. Ticks are out along with minimal mosquito action. Bear are active throughout the county, hitting birdfeeders for seeds and suet. Please put your feeders away as bears will damage them if left out. The walleye bite has been tremendous, with the mouth of the Menominee River producing many fish both by pier anglers and boaters alike.

Southeast WI
May 12, 2008

South Central WI
May 12, 2008

Grant County - The Mississippi River water levels remain high throughout the county. Most boat landings remain under water and are not usable. One would be fisherman remarked, that by the time his boat floated, the water would be coming in the doors of his truck as well! The Mississippi River had dropped several feet in the last few days, but the river current remains very strong, with the lock and dam gates still out of the water at both Dubuque and Guttenberg. Fishing and boating activities remain in limbo.

Devils Lake
May 5, 2008

Cold fronts this past week and a lack of moving water have resulted in a slower start to open water fishing this year. A warmer forecast should help things pick up as water temps increase. The one plus this past week was a new lake record walleye caught by Travis Mettler of Concrete ND. The walleye weighed a whopping 13lbs 3 ounces. Congratulations Travis.

As this report is being written, the ice is deteriorating by the hour. Above freezing temperatures and ever changing winds has been the enemy of the ice.

Mississippi Pool 4
April 24, 2008

This month has been awesome for very large walleye. Many fish have been tipping the scales at 10pounds (hard to believe but true). There was a period of about five to seven days were the bites were minimum but the bite turn into huge walleye, this was definitely a period were you didn't want to miss a single bite.

Sugar Lake is producing Crappies in 6-8 ft of water on waxies and minnows. Nice 'Gills are hitting as well in the 9-11 ft ranges on the weed flats. Sight fishing is the way to go, beware of the muskies--they are on the prowl as well.

The walleye bite is on the upswing again. Starting to get more females now in 15 -25 ft of water on the main lake points near spawning areas. Having better luck with shiners rather than live bait.

Mille Lacs
March 7, 2008

Great weather this last weekend brought out lots of perch anglers. Reports all around the lake are pretty much the same. Lots of people not so many perch. There down there but seem to be very inactive. Everyone I talked to had a few jumbos but pretty slow.

Brainerd Area
January 29, 2008

What a weekend! With the warm temperatures the Ice Fishing Extravaganza went terrific. Record crowds hit Gull lake in search of a big fish. The lucky winner landed a 5 pound walleye and drove home in a brand new truck. It was a fun weekend for everyone. The fishing was a little slow during the first part of the week but really took off when the weather warmed up again. We had some awesome walleye fishing on Gull from Thursday through the weekend.

BWCA and Ely Area
January 15, 2008

Gunflint lake. Where do I start. The weather was stupendous for Opener, more then a laker nut could ask for. Light snow and light winds with temps that never dipped below 19 at night and highs in the mid to upper twenties. So there we were, Reefraker, Rick, Harvey Lee, and myself. We arrived at the Holly Laker Place that is Gunflint Trail on a lake with same name. On the drive up the trail we saw the scorched trees from the summers forest fire. Still standing, black in color on a backdrop of white that is deep in depth and winter. Still there were trees untouched by flames as though a border was penciled in. It was good to be there again.

Detroit Lakes and Pelican Rapids
January 9, 2008

Ice fishing season is in full swing, and the fishing has been good. Not too many lakes are seeing vehicle traffic due to snow, but the warm weather has reduced the amount of snow so may be some cold weather will open some lakes up to driving. Panfishing has been very good with reports of big gills, and slabs falling victim.

Upper Red Lake
January 3, 2008

As we feel the affect of a nasty cold front and easterlies for three days we look forward to soon warming temps and steady barometers. Anglers are coming in with mixed reports and mixed feelings about the infamous Upper Red Lake and all of her twisted ways. The anglers putting in pure fishing time are coming in very successful, card players and dice rollers are not doing so well.

Illinois
November 2, 2007

The Illinois River is starting to cool. We had a 5 degree drop in the water temps from last week at Starved Rock. Water is now 55 degrees. Waiting for that special temp somewhere betwen 50-53 degrees when the saugers start there feed for the winter.

Grand Rapids
July 18, 2007

It’s the 3rd week in July and Winnie is still producing lots of nice stringers. It is getting harder to get the fish to bite out there on the humps but if you work it over and over with the right bait you will get bit. I have been using bigger leeches and crawlers that are in good shape, now is not the time to have crappy bait. The fish have a smorgasbord of food down there and you need to make them want yours. The humps and bars have been the most productive for me in the 20-24 ft of water.
