Late Ice Fishing Frenzies

Big Winnie.........Its beginning to be PRIME time.
As the temps rise in the north country and days become longer the fish
begin to stage for their spring spawn. During this time the fish begin
to go on a feeding frenzy that all anglers should use to their
advantage.
The Perch fishing on Winnibigoshish are beginning this frenzy
right now and things will continue to improve.
This is also the time of the year that larger schools of perch are
found. Most of these schools will have a mixture of sizes and you will
also find the Walleye mixed in your daily catch.
Finding schools of
larger perch often times means you must drill several dozen holes.
Begin your search in the 15' of water and continue to drill a series of
holes into deeper water. It is very common for these fish to be shallow
during the low light hours of the morning then during mid-day they move
into deeper water.
If in late afternoon the fishing in the deep water
begins to slow down try moving back up the structure that you fished
that morning.
To search for an active school use a jigging spoon such as the Scenic
Tackle Perch Jigging Spoon tipped with the head of a minnow. Watch your
electronics.
What you are looking for is for an immediate one or more
fish to meet that jigging spoon as it is falling to the bottom. Before
eliminating the hole as not having fish beneath it also try the gold
Scenic Tackle Angel Eye Spoon. This spoon is gold plated to obtain the
highest possible shine.
Open the bail of your reel and allow this spoon
to free fall down to the bottom. The design of this spoon will allow it
to “glide” away from the hole thus allowing you a horizontal retrieve.
Watch your line and rod tip. Fish will often times hit this spoon as it
is moving in the horizontal direction and swim towards you with the lure
in it’s mouth.
Something I always encourage during these warmer days is to bring the
kids out and make a day of fishing a family outing. The fishing action
on Winnie is fast enough to keep them busy and interested. This is a
great way to teach kids how to fish and to have them enjoy it also.
I
know I enjoy having my son on the lake where we fish for a while and
then when he is “tired” of pulling up fish he bundles up and heads
outside for a while. It is not uncommon to find a tonka truck or a
football in our “Big Blue Fish Buggy.”
Judds Resort has many accommodations to suit the icefisherman as well a
family looking to make an outing together. They have plowed roads that
lead to many spots that hold fish, heated fish houses, bait, modern
cabins, and a dining area that makes about the greatest double bacon
cheeseburgers in state. They also offer fish cleaning that is done
while you enjoy your evening and prepare for the next day of fishing.
Fishing is only going to get better from now until ice-out so make a
trip to Winnie. There is fun to be had by all.!!!! Hope to see you on
the ice!!
