Early Spring Walleyes
by Ron Anlauf

The second week of the Minnesota walleye season offers the potential for some terrific fishing. Early season walleyc fishing means spending a good deal of your time in relatively shallow water. Most of the action will be centered around rock reefs, sand breaks and old weed beds.

Rocky reefs and bars attract plenty of walleyes, and are easily fished with a slip bobber and anchoring technique. Peak activity periods are at dusk and dawn, and also during heavy winds.

Another key location for early season walleye are the many sand breaks that exist around much of the lake. The sand breaks attract perch, and spawning shiner minnows, which in turn will pull in the walleycs. The sand breaks are custom made for a live bait rig and can be a great place to teach beginners to fish for walleyes. The sand breaks are relatively snag free, and any resistance an angler feels is usually fish.

Depending on present conditions, another area that can start to heat up is the numerous mud flats, in the center of the lake. Although the mud flats are usually thought to produce later on in the season, they can actually kick out walleyes as early as opening day. The thing is, if they do produce fish, they’re usually big.

So there you have it. The question is; Do you want numbers, or a chance at a hawg? How about starting on some small biters, and then moving to the pig pen’? It’s totally up to you. See you there.
